Friday the 13th of all days.
- We've been busy planning the wedding - picked the place, working on the caterer (have a meeting this week with him) and then we'll have our date !! (9/19/09) Next will be booking a block of rooms at the nearest hotel, DJ, florist, etc.
- I'm on my third favor ... I picked out on two occasions different favor boxes, decided I didn't want them and we went to 2 Michael's craft stores today and bought the FINAL favor. Cute Chinese take-out containers, which we'll fill with personalized M&M's, white jordan almonds and tie off with ribbon with a wax seal with our last name initial (K).
- We've bought the invitations, programs, RSVP and place cards to do ourselves after we get all the details straight. Saved lots of money doing it this way !
- Mom's cancer grew a tiny bit so they just switched her to a new medication. She also had to go through an echocardiogram of her heart since in the catscan they thought they saw something on her right ventricle.
- Ethan starts kindergarten in one month !! (September 2nd) My mom will be getting him on and off the school bus each day. He stops going to daycare in a few weeks ! It's like getting a $700 month raise when he stops !!

How have you all been ?

About Me Meme

Found a few places online. Busy.

My life is consumed right now with courts, documents, lawyer talk, social security office, child support enforcement offices, etc. So not fun. Went to court (Juvenile and Domestic relations) last Friday. Disappointing. I got another court date from the judge in 60 days. Got an assignment from the judge on how to start handling part of the situation, which involves contacting sheriff's office in another state. Yeah, fun and money involved too. And, time off work to handle all the stuff at the courts offices when they're actually open when, oh, I'm normally at work. Ugh.

In other short, bulleted news:

I have been to Lowes, Home Depot, local nursery and bought veggies for our garden (varying types of tomatoes only this year), flowers, hanging baskets, herbs for deck boxes, etc. Rob and I are worn out and got a little sun this past weekend.

Last night after working part of the day, going to Soc. Security Admin. to handle a few things related to the child support stuff, did 2 loads of laundry, folded and put them away, mopped kitchen floor, vacuumed and proceede to then fall asleep on the sofa. Busy day.

Mother's Day is this weekend. This year I won't be spending it with MY mom. We're going to Rob's parents for a cookout. Mom and dad are going to 'babysit' so we can go out to dinner for our 1 year anniversary (a few days early) so I'll see her then. I ordered her flowers from ProFlowers.com which should be delivered Thursday or Friday. It's hard to figure out what to get her this year and her birthday is next week (59 !).

One year anniversary. Ack. One year has gone so quickly and I'm so blessed to have him in our lives. Any ideas for 1 year presents ? Quick !! I have no clue.

Work. All I can say is busy, hair pulling, migraine inducing busy. ACK !

Trying to decide where and when we're going somewhere this summer.

And, last but certainly not least:

House is still for sale. No bites. If it doesn't sell by the end of this month, I think we're taking it off the market and waiting another year...the market stinks right now. Definitely a GREAT time to buy, not so for selling one.

What are ya'll up to ??

where ... ?

Where Meme found while surfing around tonight . . .

is your cell phone? in my purse...

is your significant other? asleep in bed

is your hair? in a ponytail (the only way I can sleep)

is your mother? at home asleep probably...

is your father? at home asleep as well...

is one of your favorite things? in his bedroom fast asleep since 8:30 (my son)

was your dream last night? was in a store shopping for baby clothes (my cousin is pregnant)

can you get your favorite drink? at home in the refrigerator (iced tea)

are you right now? in the home office

is your ex? living in some apartment by himself in Delaware

is your fear? death

do you want to be in 6 years? married, Ethan in middle school, another child in school...

were you last night? at home

was the last place you drove? home from dinner out at Chicago Uno's

did you grow up? about 5 miles from here

was the last place you ate? see above answer - Uno's (I had a sirloin steak)

is (are) your TV(s)? one in living room, one in kitchen and one in the master bedroom

are your pets? cat is asleep in her bed in the master bedroom

is your computer? one at work on my desk and one here in my home office

is your mood? sleepy..going to bed when I finish this - it's 10:55 p.m.

is your oldest friend? at home asleep (my mom)

is your car? in the driveway

is your wedding ring? Does anyone else still read this thing ? :)

Our lives have been extremely busy. House is still on market, but only one showing in over a month. We're thinking of taking it off the market for another year. Haven't made our final decision YET.

The rundown of other stuff:
- We will celebrate our one year anniversary together in May !! I'm trying to come up with something to give him that's meaningful. I'm thinking DVD with 365 slides (365 = days in a year) that tell him reasons I love him. Corny ?
- Ethan's signed up for kindergarten. Hard to believe. We have the first supply list too...fun stuff ahead !
- Daycare is going up yet AGAIN. Up to almost $656 a month. Ouch.
- Just got good news - my old car loan is PAID OFF. Had a call last week said I still owed $1200, and get a letter in the mail today saying it's paid. That's all the proof I need.
- We're going to a 25th wedding anniversary party for his aunt/uncle this weekend. We got a really great gift (we think). I'll post pictures over at Flickr once the bow is tied on it. We shopped at Pier 1, Sur La Table, Michaels and the ABC store to get all the pieces - a huge bowl (fixed like a gift basket) with dish towels, bottles of margarita mixes, the liquor to go in it, salt and sugar for the rims of the 2 new glasses also included. Stopped in Michaels and got the cellophane and ribbon to put around it. They're gonna love it !
- Rob's having oral surgery Friday. They're going to have him under for 4 hours. Taking 2 teeth out, skin grafts, stitches - OUCH ! We stocked up on Jello, yogurt, broths, bottled water and Gatorade. And, we've got plenty of ice for the ice packs for his face.
- Mom is doing well. Thankfully. She's got her first symptom of the cancer medicine (Nexavar). The bottoms of her feet and palms of her hands HURT. She's been wearing slippers (ordered Crocs and some type of slip on shoes from Lands End that hopefully she'll be able to wear). Her blood thinner has been working good and otherwise she's doing well.

One Word

Respond with one word meme:

Here are the questions followed by my answers:
1. I need to start allowing myself time to write in paragraph form and not these little lists :)

- lots of house stuff going on . . . if you look at my photos at Flickr you know what I'm talking about.
- getting a family photo done Sunday with my mom, dad and sister. We only have one or two snapshots of us all four in a picture. Mom wanted to get a family picture done (so did my sister and I) before she should potentially get sick from the 'cancer pill'
- got good news...mom's blood results are 2.8. Last week they were 1.7. This means good stuff !
- I've started playing scrabble at Scrabulous.com - it's addicting!
- Wedding talk has begun...just detail related stuff, like what I want and he wants. He told me I should get a head start on making an engagement video CD (I've made quite a few for family stuff, etc. and people love them !). I tricked him into answering when my due date for this 'project' was. He said in about 3 months !! I'll let ya'll know when I know :) I told him to keep me surprised about it all.
- Work has been crazy busy !! New project that's going to be as big as the program I already manage...no extra people to do it with. So - that means lots of extra work!
- Mess with my vehicle loan of the Taurus that was totaled has consumed too many conversations lately. It seems it takes quite a LONG time for paperwork and money to exchange hands between insurance companies. Just found out today the GAP insurance company sent their check yesterday (over a month after my accident) and that the dealership just cancelled my extended warranty and that money will be ready for my pick-up on Thursday so I can mail it to the old loan holder. Whew. About damn time. Now that loan should be paid off and closed SOON !

Home.Again.

I've had my backache for a couple days now. It's from the accident and it comes and goes. I'm hoping as more time goes, it gets less frequent. So, I'm home 'trying' to take it easy. With that said, here's some of the things we've done in the last few days.

Saturday - Ethan's 5th birthday ! Go to Flickr to see a few pictures.

Sunday - rode around looking at houses. We fell in love with one of them. It was a open house, in our price range. 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, hot tub, screened in porch, above ground pool, 1 car garage. We're hoping to put a contract on it in the next week !

Other stuff: we've primed a few areas and are repainting a few walls before putting the house on the market, I painted the trim and doors in the bathroom (the only part that wasn't done when we remodeled the bathroom last spring) and we've got yard cleanup yet to do. My realtor wants us to have it done if we plan on putting the house on the market next week ! I'm praying for good weather this weekend !

This Sunday, we're taking Rob's parents and brother for an Easter brunch buffet at the Boathouse - our favorite local restaurant. $30 per person and Ethan eats free. Not bad at all !!

Yep, another one . ..

- I'm at home sick AGAIN. I went to work for 45 minutes this morning and turned right around and came home. I was home yesterday too. Fever. Hot one minute in sweats and in chills and covered up the next. Stomach rumbling and doesn't feel good. Ugh. Need to get better by Friday. (Ethan's bday party is Saturday and we have some last minute stuff to do on Friday)
- Mom's back in the hospital. She had a cat scan yesterday (first one since surgery) to see what cancer is left - if any. They called her last night to get her to the ER. She's got blood clots AGAIN. The oncologist asked her last week at her visit if her surgeon had put her on thinners. He hadn't. He was going to get in touch with the doctor and that was the last thing she heard until last night. She didn't want to go back to the hospital. She's had enough. My sister said they put her on thinners and will most likely let her go home today. The oncologist is supposed to come see her in the hospital room today - instead of her going to his office today as scheduled to get the results of the cat scan. We're still waiting to see what the next course of action will be. Traditional chemo will not work for her type of cancer. They have 2 types of pills they can use and if neither of those work they'll use IV type. Said she'd most likely be on treatment the rest of her life... We'll see what today's visit with her oncologist brings though.
- It's supposed to rain on Saturday. That's what they're calling for right now. I've got 12 people coming Saturday for Ethan's birthday party (his actual bday isn't until the 19th). We're grilling out : hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, deviled eggs, chips and dip, pickles, cole slaw and carrot cake and ice cream for dessert (Ethan's choice). I have room for 6 or 7 inside at the kitchen table. Please pray it doesn't rain !
- Bought Ethan a new digital alarm clock / CD player combo, a few new music CD's, t-ball set with actual metal bat and mitt/ball and a couple other small things.
- Easter's coming up on the 23rd. We've made reservations at our favorite restaurant on the water and are taking Rob's parents as a treat for their anniversary in April. Ethan's making out like a bandit - the Easter bunny comes the weekend after his birthday (he's getting a couple movies, candy, etc. etc.)
- We got a new gas grill Saturday. It's niiiice. We've already used it once and Rob's going to grill marinated pork chops tonight (marinated in sprite, lemons and lime and orange juice - he's a chef, I guess he knows what he's doing :)
- Court date: May 2nd. Custody/child support/visitation stuff.
- Ethan's kindergarten registration is April 17th. Yowzers !!
- Must go lie down.... ugh!

just another survey

1. Insurance claims it's experimental for her case and so she's now scheduled for a CAT scan. They're seeing what if any cancer is left and trying to determine which chemo / pill to put her on. She's having some issues dealing with all of this - which most of us would. But, because only 10% of people get this type of cancer it's hard for the doctors to figure out her treatment.

Rob's out of town for work tonight. Me and Ethan by ourselves - so we treated ourselves to dinner out.

Got a new vehicle this week - a 2008 Ford Truck Escape in fire red ! Loving it !

I had a run around day (had to take off to get all this accomplished): commissioner of revenue office to tell them about my wreck and to ensure they get the new vehicle in their system so I pay personal property taxes in June, DMV to tell them of the wreck in their system as well, to the courthouse to get a duplicate copy of my deed (needed to prove residence for Ethan's kindergarten registration), duplicate of divorcee decree and copies of VERY interesting documents that will help in another upcoming court case with the ex-husband, to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations court to get some paperwork, to Target to buy a cake stand/punch bowl (by Anchor Hocking), etc. and to Kohls to return a few things and landed some new spring/summer clothes for Ethan and new deviled egg plate, some white Food Network platters for his party and other functions we'll have and a ice bucket for his party.

Preparing for Ethan's 5th birthday party - next weekend ! We'll have 12 people in our small house. Praying for a sunny day next Saturday (15th) so 6 people can sit inside at the kitchen table and 6 outside on the patio furniture on the deck.

Made Ethan's 'well baby' checkup for after his 5th birthday to get the last of his immunizations and paperwork for his kindergarten registration in April !!! ACK!

There's lots of other stuff going on. If you're in the know of my history with the ex-husband and want an update on the upcoming court stuff, email me and I'll discuss there.

*{@**&&& insurance company

Let's backtrack about 10 years ago. Sometime when I first became a first time homeowner, I transferred my auto to the same company I got my homeowners insurance with. I've paid this same company the amount they've asked for each month for 10 years. No problem.

We'll until last Thursday - the day of the accident, I had never had to file a claim. This is an EXCELLENT record. I have a local agent, but the company is based out of another state. Little did I realize the issues this would present when I actually, gasp...had to use my insurance. My agent (who is local) took a statement of the accident from me, got info, etc. etc... said he'd line up my rental car, last Thursday. It wasn't until late Friday I hadn't heard about the rental car I called and got his secretary, who within 30 minutes had it all worked out and I got the car that evening. The actual insurance company called Friday evening and said they'd have an adjuster out to take a look within 3 business days (this is unheard of with local ins. companies, as it usually is the same day or next day). Anyways, I'm currently in 2 days of training for work purposes and have my cell phone off during class. I get out of training and check voicemail this afternoon. Supposedly, my insurance company contracted out with another agency to do the adjusting work. What a mess. So, the lady asks ME to call her with the info about the tow bill that she had looked at my car yesterday - this lady gives me a phone # which is in another part of this state. Now, mind you, the state trooper called and got my car towed off the interstate last week and I didn't pay a cent. All I have is a business card for the tow truck co. And, when that tow truck took it to their lot, another tow truck picked it up to tow to the body shop once my agent had called me and told me he needed to get it to the body shop, etc.. I have no clue how much anything was, but the adjuster thinks I have ALL the info. And, another guy from the insurance co. called to get my statement of the accident yesterday (which, remember, I gave my agent LAST Thursday !). So, anyways, I called the lady back from the contract adjusters office, only to get a fax machine - she had given me the wrong damn phone #. I was livid !!! This is their job to get this stuff straight. I just want to know if they can fix my car or if I need to buy a new one! So, I called the insurance company back and left a voicemail and emailed the lady at the insurance company. I BETTER know about my car tomorrow. You had better believe I'm going to pull my auto insurance AND maybe my homeowners from this company when it's all over with. I just heard that a local HUGE homebuilder had their insurance policies with my agent and changed to another company for this almost same reason.

Anyways - here's a few bullets about my week so far (since it's almost 11 p.m. and I'm heading to bed):

Rob's out of town tonight - so I get the bed to myself. Although, it's awkward without him here...

Ethan's birthday invitations have been made out and will be mailed out by end of this week (he's turning 5 in a few weeks!!)

In 2 days of training for work purposes - but training is being held only 10 minutes from my house. Loving it !

My mom is doing really well - although she lost a lot of weight while in the hospital (nasty hospital food!) and she hasn't even started chemo yet. Please continue to pray !!

Rob and I are nearing our one year anniversary (in May) !!

Car deal - hoping they can fix it and I won't have to deal with getting a new car and wrapping over the remainder of my old loan, and going up on personal property insurance, etc... UGH.

Back is slowly starting to feel better and I'm not having to take the muscle relaxer at night - but, am still having to take the ibuprofen (2400 mg a day)

House - we're still working on landscaping and hope to get some more done this weekend. Yes, I just moved in my house not even a year ago...but, that was just Ethan and I - and it was perfect for just him and I. Having another person's STUFF in this house has made us squish at the seams so to speak. We want something big that we can entertain in...

That's about it for tonight. A few new pictures of Ethan up over at Flickr :)

It's Been Awhile...

Sorry for not updating regularly over the last couple weeks.

- I've had bronchitis and finally had x-rays and a flu test. Got an inhaler and that was the cure to a 2 week illness.

- Update on mom: She's been home for a couple weeks now. She had her staples finally taken out 2 days ago, has been to the heart doctor for a post-op checkup, her urology oncologist (who gave her news that after the pathology on her kidney, etc. and said she was doing really well). She also saw another of the surgeon's that was on-call and helped with her operation. Next Friday (29th) she goes to the oncologist who will be treating her with chemo to determine the course of action. They want to wait until it's been 4-6 weeks since her surgery to start anything. Right now it's only been 3 weeks. They are going to send her for another scan next week to see where everything's at and make sure nothing else has popped up since surgery. They weren't able to get a couple of the lymph nodes in the upper chest and she'll need chemo to treat those.

- I had an accident. I ended up going to the doctor later in the day (should have let the ambulance take me to the ER when they wanted to) and diagnosed with a lumbar sprain (and got 3 prescriptions to take ; ibuprofen 800 mg 3 x a day, pain killer and a muscle relaxer to take at night). I'm still sore through the chest from the seat belt and the back hurts. My muscle achiness is slowly going away. I picked up my rental car yesterday - a Ford Focus. My insurance pays up to $600 maximum. So, I got the cheapest thing I could since I'll probably need a rental 3 - 4 weeks at the minimum. The insurance adjuster is scheduled to look at my car by Wednesday this week. Not sure if they'll fix it or mark it as totaled. If it's totaled - I'll end up having to get a new car. But, I owe like $18k on my loan, and the car is only worth like $9k... Ugh. Let me tell you..buy GAP insurance. I've got to call Ford and see if I have that, but I don't think I purchased it. It pays the remainder of your loan if you're in an accident.

- In other news Rob and I have been working on landscaping. We put landscape timbers (even though I had the look !) around the front flower beds, and he worked on putting in terraced steps on the slope my house sits on. We bought more bushes and he planted those today and my tulips Ethan gave me for my birthday last year (the bulbs are already budding!). We're hoping to sell the house in the next month or so, but have to see what happens with my car deal.

What's been happening in YOUR world ?

Doctor, Doctor

Well, I'm still sick. I was feeling better and then Thursday morning all went downhill. I woke with a sore throat AGAIN, ears were still 'clogged' and I'm coughing horribly (w/blood - sorry for the TMI). I've been to the doctors two times:

January 30th - had been sick 2 days and didn't want it to progress any further (and I wanted to get in to the hospital to see mom).I was told it was just a cold and I have ear infections. Was given 2000mg of Amoxicillin to take. Move forward.

February 7th - back to the doctor. Still same symptoms, etc. Was told my ears are still infected and I have bronchitis. Great (/end sarcasm). Was given 500 mg of Levaquin to take. Move forward.

February 9th- Rob wants me to go back to the doctor. I'm now coughing the blood up, horrible wheezing and just overall muscle soreness from the 9 days of coughing, etc.

I'm waiting on Rob to get out of the shower so we can go. Between the three of us being sick (Ethan, Rob and myself) we've spent about $200-250 in doctors, prescriptions, over the counter cough medicines, tissues, chapstick, etc. AND, today I get to spend more. And, I have another annual doctor appt this week with a specialist which adds more. It's not that I don't have it - but it gets to a point, you're tired of being sick and spending money on doctors that have no clue what they're doing.

In other news, mom's coming home today most likely...

My What a week . . .

I'm sorry for not being better at updates this week. With being sick, working full-time, visiting mom 2 nights after work and trying to keep family/friends updated...I'm worn out! It's been an awesome week and so much has happened !!!

MONDAY:
They woke mom up from sedation and removed breathing tube. Dad didn't know until he got there. The doctors hadn't told him. He walked in to her being awake. She said 'I guess you've got to put up with me a little longer'. He called me at work and told me this and I cried for joy. She still has her sense of humor thru all of this.

TUESDAY:
I was determined to get in and see her. I called in through the entry telephone into ICU and asked permission. The nurse said come on in ! We have to wash our hands, put gloves on, special gowns and I have to wear a mask in order to not spread germs. Have to wash our hands when we exit too. First time I saw her since before she was wheeled in to surgery and we said our 'I love you's' and 'goodbye'. She had had a liquid breakfast, lunch and dinner followed by pain medicine which made her talk and act funny. Doctors removed her bandages from the incision sites and said everything is good. Got her up to sit in a chair. She's told she may go home this weekend. This is too unbelievable and scary for us.

WEDNESDAY:
I went to visit again. They had her up in the chair again. She's had stomach issues all day - they're sending samples to test for some gastro issue that can happen to surgical patients in the hospital.(I think this came back fine later). She ate solid foods (roast, carrots, mashed potatoes, angel food cake). The physical therapist worked with her on how to get out of bed without using her arms (due to the incision up her chest). Talk began on sending her to another local hospital to receive in-house therapy. She's not really interested and wants to go home.

TODAY (THURSDAY):
I wasn't planning on visiting - need to catch up on some things at home and not fair to Rob to have him pick up Ethan, feed him and ensure he's ready for bed before I get home like other nights. Mom was already having plenty of visitors today and said she'd be tired anyways. Dad called mid-day at work and told me she will be coming home this weekend. She declined the move to another hospital for therapy and insurance will be paying for therapists to come to the house to work with her on getting strength back to her legs, etc. Doctors still saying she's doing well and her remaining kidney looks good.

We're scared to see her come home as I don't think we think she's really ready or we're ready. But, she's tired of hospitals and doctors at this point and just wants to come home. Remember when she first went in, she had been to the doctor and ran errands in the morning, got a call to come to the emergency room. She never knew when she went to the ER she wouldn't be coming home until after surgery - that was over 2 weeks ago ! I think she'll be okay and dad says he's going to go by her wishes of not wanting to transfer to another hospital and bring her home and take care of her during recovery. We'll all have to ensure she's got someone with her 24/7 for awhile until she's stable on her own feet and can handle doing things on her own. I'm excited for her future, yet scared. I want her recovery to go well, therapy to give her the strength back she'll need for the upcoming road of chemotherapy.

In other news, a lot has happened this week with my father realizing just how good Rob is for Ethan and I. He's made many comments such as 'I don't know what you'd be doing right now without him' (referring to Ethan can't come in the ICU, and if I didn't have Rob to pick him up and watch him while I visited in the hospital, I probably wouldn't be able to come up and visit with mom). He also said 'You better hang onto that one'. Rob is good as gold to Ethan and I and I'm very blessed. I'm looking forward to getting better (I went back to the doctor today...7 days of antibiotics and still feel horrible, now I'm told I still have double ear infections and have touches of bronchitis, so I got another medication), Rob getting better (he has bronchitis as well) in time for Valentines Day next week. Rob and I are taking Ethan to spend a few hours with Rob's parents and brother while we enjoy a dinner out by ourselves at 'The Melting Pot'. We haven't had dinner or a night out by ourselves since we went to Massachussetts last October !

Well- it's 11 p.m. and I'm tired...heading to bed. Hope things are well for all of you !!!

under the weather . . .

Yes...

I'm still sick. Coughing, blowing my nose, taking my prescription antibiotic and Robitussin. (and Rob's still sleeping on the sofa, in hopes of not getting sick too)

Mom: still has the breathing tube in, they still have her 'under' on sedation and they tested her for MRSA [which she tested positive for](read more on that here), which seems to breed in hospitals. She's nearing her 2nd week in the hospital. I'm guessing the way things are going she'll probably be in most of February. We'll see though. We're taking each day as they come right now.

I'm a little upset that I'm still sick and can't see her. It would help me tremendously to see her for myself. It was extremely difficult Friday morning to say goodbye and I love you, not knowing if she'd make it through and to know she's made it, but you can't see her. Does that even make sense ?

We went to Rob's parents and picked up an oak tea cart they were getting rid of (and matches my kitchen table perfectly). I came home, cleaned it up and then moved things around and cleaned the kitchen. Not something I really felt like doing, but so happy I did and able to organize. And, mopped the kitchen floor. And, started my taxes, but found I'm missing one number which I'll have to call and get tomorrow.... very ambitious and productive today!!! Trying to get a lot of this stuff accomplished now before mom really needs me there to help.

what happened today...

Today...

Grocery shopping.

Came home. I put groceries away and then crashed on the sofa for a few hours. This cold and horrible cough has whipped the heck out of me.

Rob fixed three meals for my sister and dad (mom did all the cooking, so they've been eating out quite a bit and eating frozen stuff you throw in the oven). He fixed: crabcakes and corn hush puppies, lasagna and rolls (which were in our freezer and he thawed out for them) and roasted chicken w/red roasted potatoes and green peas. We had bought separated microwaveable meal containers and he packed them all up and now all they have to do is reheat and eat :)

I got up from the nap and made homemade vegetable soup. They'll get some of that for another meal tomorrow (since it wasn't done before we left for their house). I'm also going to take my Nanny some.

I feel atleast if I'm cooking and helping someone, I'm doing something. I can't go visit mom until I'm fully well. Though I didn't do alot of the work - I came up with the idea and helped pay :) Rob (who has a degree in culinary arts and was a former chef) is a total blessing to me, which I already knew - but, for him to stand a few hours cooking and preparing all of the meals, it made me tear up and made me realize as we near a year anniversary together, it's more apparent every day.

Today's Update on mom: Dad and my sister went to visit this morning and she looks good. Her surgeon (urologist oncologist) called dad and said all her levels are where they should be and her blood pressure, etc. look good. The other doctor visited her and she turned her head to him when she heard him - VERY good sign ! They're already looking at removing her breathing tube tomorrow and taking the sedation away to let her start waking up (she will still have the spinal for pain management). We all actually had a good night's sleep last night - after almost 2 weeks of this hell. My dad tore me up at the hospital yesterday ; but, it's so good to see this softer side of him. I actually know how much he loves my mom. But, I heard him tell her before she was wheeled away for surgery yesterday...that's something I've NEVER in my almost 29 years heard him say outloud to her. After she was wheeled away and we stood their crying, not knowing if we'd see her again, he told me and my sister "I NEED your mom". What a tear jerker, not that we haven't cried enough to fill a river over the last few weeks.

So far, everything's looking good!!! We'll continue to take each day slowly. Please continue w/the prayers, they're working !!!

She made it through surgery !!!!

Update on mom’s surgery from yesterday:

They took her in at about 7 a.m., called us in the waiting room they had started at 8:45 and they were done a little after 2 p.m.

She is now in ICU for 2 days under sedation, on a respirator, etc. and has an epidural in place for pain management now and later. She will remain in step down ICU for 2 weeks after they remove the breathing tubes, drainage tubes and get her breathing on her own, get her to progress and go up steps, etc. before she goes home in a couple weeks. Right now, the doctors said she is in critical care and to take it day by day.

They removed the right kidney, adrenal gland to the right kidney, a few lymph nodes in her abdomen and retrieved the clots from the vena cava. They had to perform the cut to her chest like they would for a bypass patient (through the sternum) and an upside down V cut across her abdomen. She is currently doing as well as can be expected and her ICU nurse and one of the surgeons reports her lungs and heart were very strong through surgery and now. I can’t go back to see her until I get over this upper respiratory cold / cough, so my sister and dad will update me over the next few days until I get well enough to go visit her.

She will also most likely have to follow-up with chemo treatments later.

More updates

I'm at home sick. Went to work for almost 4 hours and had to leave. I look like Rudolph from blowing my nose so many times, my ears are full and I feel like I'm talking in a barrel. Doctor gave me 2000mg of Amoxicillin yesterday when I went to the doctor, and told me to take Sudafed on top of it. I've got double ear infections and upper respiratory going on (luckily no strep throat!).

On the mom front, here's what's gone on over the last day or so. I haven't been able to go to the hospital (and it's KILLING me !) because I'm sick and we can't risk her getting anything. I've been calling around to local pharmacies to see if they sell hospital / surgical masks and 2 I've called don't. I'm going to call up to her floor at the hospital to see if they can give me a few if I go up this evening. Even with a mask and constant washing of hands and antibacterial stuff, I'm not going to do anything but poke my head in. Luckily when I was well Monday night, I gave her a hug and kiss. It may be another week or so until I'm fully well that I'll be able to do that.

They did the kidney procedure yesterday - don't know what the official name of it is. They put this 'coil' somewhere in the tube that flows to the kidney to restrict blood flow. Originally, we thought they just restricted all blood flow - but they said that would be really painful. She was in a lot of pain yesterday and doped up on morphine. I was able to talk to her this morning and she seems ok, but dealing with some slight after effect pain.

They were supposed to test her carotid artery yesterday on one side of her neck. The cardiac surgeon thought he may have detected a blockage when he was listening the other day and they just want to double check before surgery. IF something is found today, that will definitely delay surgery. Mom said she hopes it all comes out well, not only because she doesn't want to have to go through an additional surgery, but because she's mentally put herself out there and is ready for surgery tomorrow. We've all been on pins and needles since last week when we found out surgery was this Friday. We'd like her to go through it, make it through okay and start the slow recovery process (they're talking about having to cut the chest/sternum open if they have to do the bypass during surgery). Surgery will then be followed by chemo treatments.

It's literally been like living in H*LL the last few weeks and the closer it gets to tomorrow morning the worse I feel. The doctor asked that all family be in the waiting room (we don't know where or what waiting room at this point) by 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. Rob will be waking up Ethan tomorrow and ensuring he gets to daycare (and picking him up if I need him to). Her life is in the hands of someone much higher than us and the skilled doctors and surgeons tomorrow. Please keep everyone in your prayers and thoughts !

Whew.

I hate doing these, but today warrants a bulleted list. I'm tired. First day back after 2 days off last week.

- Took Ethan back to his old daycare today. No problems. Got him in and me out the door in 10 minutes flat. He was glad to see his old friends.
- Work. Trying to catch up, but everyone checking on how I'm doing and my mom. Must get MANY things done before I leave Thursday evening.
- Left work at 3:15 to head to a dentist appt. Ethan was supposed to go with me, but because he's got a cold, I canceled his. I went. Nice- stress not only causes headaches, but apparently gum issues. I had my gums irrigated. Not bad - but not too fun in those irritated places.
- Home for dinner. Left Ethan with Rob while I headed to hospital. (6 p.m.)
- Got to hospital at 6:15 - left at 8:15. Dad and my sister were there too.
- Got home, Rob had washed dishes - left me pots and pans. Finished them.
- Ethan to bed.
- I'm checking email and relaxing a little bit before bed. What a day !

FIVE (5) doctors came to see mom today. The surgeon, cardiac surgeon, oncologist, cardiologist and radiologist. The radiologist goes first. He's doing the procedure to cut off blood flow to the kidney Wednesday and said the doctors haven't decided quite yet, but may also be putting in an 'umbrella or filter' in her upper neck to trap the clots incase they travel during surgery which he would do at the same time.
Mom's had so many phone calls and visitors - it's tiring her out and blood pressure getting high (for her). I told her she just needs to tell people she's tired and they're going to have to step out for awhile. They'll understand.

How are all of you doing ?!?

Great...(/end sarcasm)

Ethan's sick (cough / stuffed nose / etc.). I was worried. She was just bored and wanted to talk :) We talked for an hour! So nice to have a mom and daughter talk. I was in need of it too. She updated me on the doctor visits. One came last night at 6:30 p.m. and one this morning at 6 a.m. (and so didn't the hospital trash lady - at 3 FREAKIN' AM !!!!!)
- Mom had asked me to go change my grandmothers bandage on her toe. Got to my nanny's and my aunt/uncle had already been and taken care of it. However, helped my Nanny with a few dressing issues (she'll be 88 this May!) Then, she surprised me with enough money to pay for almost two months of Ethan's daycare - what a blessing (even though I didn't 'need' it - she said 'he's worth it' and it's not like I don't have it).
- Ethan and I stopped and got lunch.
- Ethan and I went to Food Lion and bought my mom a few things for the hospital (cereal since she doesn't like their breakfasts, bowls to eat cereal in and tic tacs since she ALWAYS has one in her mouth and a magazine to read)
- Went to hospital and spent 4 hours. Ethan stayed busy coloring, drawing and playing his hand held Leapster.
- Doctor came in and talked to mom as Ethan and I were about to leave. I stayed some more to try to calm her down and get her to eat the oh so yummy (end sarcasm) dinner (catfish, hush puppies and mixed veggies with lemon maringue tart).
- Doctor has rearranged his schedule, along with a cardiologist surgeon and another surgeon and urologist oncologist on his team. Here's their current plan. (she won't be going home as she had hoped before surgery)
-----> Sunday: checked out by another doctor on his team
-----> Monday: EKG (heart check up) by her cardiologist
-----> Tuesday: some test I forget...
-----> Wednesday: go to radiology for them to go in (almost like a
heart catherization) to cut off blood supply to the cancer
ridden kidney
-----> Thursday: cleansing of the colon, etc. to get ready for surgery
-----> early Friday AM: stop the heparin and coumadin blood thinners
-----> Friday: SURGERY - 5 hours. It will be quite extensive and
a 'very difficult maneuver' according to the urologist
oncologist (Dr Franks). If all goes well and she makes it
through okay, she'll be in ICU atleast 2 days and then in step
down for 7-10 days.
** He also informed me of everything: she has cancer in the right kidney, cancer in the upper lymph nodes in the chest, clots in the vena cava, small clots in the lungs and upper abdomen) They're new plan of attack is now no chemo until after surgery to get the cancer in the lymph nodes.... But, the doctor said the main thing is to get her to make it through the maneuver of getting the clot out of the vena cava. The blood loss can be anywhere from 1 liter to 10-20 liters.

I called Rob and I stopped by the house and picked him up. We went out to a nice dinner at a local Italian restaurant, Sergios. I had shrimp marinara, a glass of red wine and unsweet iced tea. Nice dinner and now home to rest. Tomorrow...up in the AM, over to cousins to hand over my old maternity clothes (she's expecting in August) and then up to hospital in evening (after getting some laundry done).

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend - and, stay warm !

things that make me happy

Things that are making me happy (even at this terrible time):

- being in a loving & meaningful relationship

- having a son that is mushy and doesn't mind giving 'Eskimo' kisses (with your noses) and hugs

- becoming closer with my dad during all of this (I actually got a hug, kiss and I love you from him the other night - something I haven't heard since I told them I was pregnant with Ethan)

- iced tea (always a comfort)

- knowing I'm not reverting to my old eating while being stressed out

- I've lost 7 lbs (last check 2 weeks ago ; need to get back on the scale !)

- my jeans were loose today and almost fell off my hips (forgot to put a belt on and didn't realize I've lost that many inches!)

Hospital Visit

Ethan and I headed to the hospital after a quick lunch out after his daycare. He did wonderfully for his first time visiting the hospital.

He didn't want to get near my mom ('Grandma') at first because she was in a strange bed and had things coming out of her (just an IV). But, I took him over there and put him in the bed with her and he lightened up. But, he still stared at the IV like it was something foreign.

The doctor FINALLY came in that will be taking care of her now (a general oncologist). She's currently on 'Heparin', a blood thinner and they'll be adding on 'Comadin' another thinner. It seems that the 'stuff' in the vena cava isn't cancer, but instead it's a clot and the clots have broken off into little clots in her lungs and abdomen. But, it seems that this is also part of kidney cancer and par for the course, unfortunately. They also want to start her on chemo ASAP. She'll start off with a pill form called Nexavar which is relatively new (or had the option in an injectable kind - none of the IV drip stuff is used regularly for kidney cancer). One doctor mentioned a biopsy (since they haven't done one), but this doctor didn't. At this point mom said she's just going to do what they want her to, that it's their field of speciality and she's not going to question it.

Anyways, I'm heading back to the hospital tomorrow afternoon sometime. She'll be in over the weekend into the first of next week as they monitor the blood thinners, etc.

Continue Praying

I'm not one that likes to ask for things. But, I'm making an exception. I'm asking everyone to continue praying for my mom and family.

I was at work yesterday and it was about 5 minutes until time to pack up and leave for the day. My caller ID showed my parents home phone #. It was mom. She said, you need to come get Ethan. I'm thinking Ethan's sick, etc... she said she had gotten a call back from the oncologist that she needed to go to the emergency room and get put on blood thinners immediately. I sobbed - and truth be told, I have no clue how I left the building, got in my car and made my way out of downtown and on I-95 towards their house so quick - 15 minutes. I sat and talked with mom and dad until my sister got home from work about 10 minutes later. I had to take Ethan home and Rob was going to watch him - but, mom said you know how ER's are and space for people and no sense of you doing that. So we all cried, hugged, said I love you's - but it was when my mom bent down to hug Ethan and say 'Bye, Grandma loves you' that we all lost it. Ethan started crying.

I'm trying to get Ethan to understand what the hospital is and have told him Grandma is really sick and the doctors have got to take really good care of her to get her better. But, he doesn't seem to really grasp the concept. This afternoon when I pick him up from daycare (12:15) we're heading to the hospital. They're talking about having to put her on chemo first- but the oncologist that will be taking over her care has to see her first. One doctor did tell her they'd probably put her on the pill form chemo where she won't lose her hair (mom doesn't care either way - her hairdresser also makes wigs, so that's an option if it gets to that point).

Unfortunately, cancer isn't new to me. My ex-husbands father died of liver cancer, my mom's dad (my Papa) had cancer and recovered but then later died of emphysema (about 3 years ago) and mom's had issues in the past too. I don't know if they'll be doing the surgery on the planned date now or not.

Better get going have to get some personal stuff taken care of before I pick up Ethan. Took today and tomorrow off in order to get his daycare situation straightened out and to get mom through this inital hospital visit.

If you've kept up...

Welcome back. I'm hoping to use this as an outlet.

If you've been keeping up with me on Flickr over the last (almost) year, and moreso recently (and listed as a friend/family) then you know my mother was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer.

This news was a bombshell to me, my sister, my father and my mother. She was feeling pretty good - except for ongoing backpain since last July. No doctors had been able to find a problem. She passed a kidney stone a few weeks ago and made an appt with a urologist to get a cat scan to ensure she didn't have any more. The news came back that she had a tumor on her kidney (as in external). They sent her to a oncologist (cancer doctor - and one that specializes in cancers of the kidneys/bladder, etc.). That doctor appt was last Wednesday. I was at her house picking up Ethan when she got home from her appt. It wasn't good. It was devastating news...

This blog will be my outlet during her surgery, recovery (hopefully!!) and a place for me to reconnect with my online friends that have been there constantly over the years through all my other heartaches, successes and life happenings.
